Visitors to the Dog Park

It’s a Long Drive to the Dog Park

unnamed

Meet Hernan Causillas, who drove all the way from Brooklyn, NY to visit the Rebecca Weitsman Memorial Dog Park.  Well, not exactly.  Actually, Hernan, along with his wife Laura and son Andres, were on a school recess road trip through upstate New York, when they spotted from the highway some grassy expanses in the Hickories Park.  Perhaps there would be a place, they thought, to let two Siberian Huskies stretch their legs.  So they were pleasantly surprised when they came upon the road sign reading, “This Way to the Dog Park.”

At home in Brooklyn, the Causillas have nearby access to the 595-acre Prospect Park, to which they can take Huskies Phoenix and Achilles for exercise.  But off-leash use is limited there to early morning and late night periods, and the wide-open spaces have no fencing to provide canine containment.  So they were happy to find our Dog Park open for off-leash use in the middle of the afternoon, and with spacious fenced areas in which they could let the young pups run freely.

Previously from California – where he practiced personal fitness training on a part-time basis – Hernan recounted the serendipity that brought the family cross-country.  During a visit to New York City for his sister’s wedding, word of his specialization spread among the attending friends and guests, and, before he knew it, he had 12 health-conscious clients signed up for his professional fitness training program. Hernan contacted Laura and told her to pack things up, “We’re moving to New York.”

As many Dog Park newcomers do, they first let Phoenix and Achilles become acclimated to the surroundings within the 9,000 square foot Agility Gym.  But, as I chatted with Hernan, Laura and Andres soon took the energetic pups into the Large Dog Area for some extended sprints.

As a means to bring a calming focus to family members at the time Hernan faced serious surgical procedures, blue-eyed Phoenix was the first addition to the family in late-2014.  Well Phoenix fit in just fine and, having earned the hearts of the family, was rewarded with a four-legged pack mate in spring 2015 – his half-brother Achilles.  As evidenced below – now at 17 months and 9 months old – they are two beautiful dogs.

We love all of our local community visitors to the Rebecca Weitsman Memorial Dog Park.  But it is always fun and rewarding to share our incredible facility with travelers that are in need of a clean and safe place to provide their driving companions some much needed exercise.

It was great visiting with the Causillas family – all five of them – during their sunny February afternoon visit.  We hope they may stop by again on another trip to the Southern Tier.
